Company
Background
IDS was established
in September 2001 by Jeremy Fernando with the backing and encouragement of the
first ever technology incubator in Sri Lanka, the Conceptnursery.
Mr. Fernando
is an engineer by profession, with over 25 years of experience in various fields,
out of which almost 15 years have been overseas. He has specialized in Service
Management, working with well-known companies such as Toyota Motor Corporation
of Japan, Burns Philp of U.K and W. R. Carpenters of Australia. In the
area of information technology, Mr. Fernando has been trained by LXE Incorporation
of U.S.A (an EMS Technologies company) related to Wireless Data Communication
and Trimble Navigation of U.S.A on Global Positioning Systems (GPS). He has gained
valuable experience in computerization of service operations with W. J Towell
Computers of Oman and software project management experience with Electronic Data
Systems (EDS), now known as iOM, in Sri Lanka.
Solutions
The core business areas of IDS are data communication and
software, specializing in mobile and wireless data communication.
Software
The flagship product of IDS is Totally Integrated Management
System (TIMS) which is a business solution with six seamlessly integrated
modules handling the areas such as Finance, Personnel, Purchase, Inventory, Sales
and Service. The system has been developed in Visual Basic and deployed with MS
SQL or MS Access as the back-end. TIMS is truly a multi-user and on-line
business solution where the users could achieve near paper-less office environment,
installed on a Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN). TIMS has the
capability of utilizing Wireless Data Communication to capture data using mobile
Radio Data Terminals. Barcode Readers and Magnetic Swipe Card Readers could also
be used for data capture. Another innovative product of IDS, Automated
Service Monitoring System (Asms), is a middle-ware
component, which can reside on a stand-alone PC or a workstation of a LAN and
receive information form an existing software package such as TIMS. Based
on the information received and pre-defined business rules of the user, Asms
functions as a customized messaging system using Short Message Service (sms) of
Mobile Phones or Email to send and receive messages. Such messages could be alerts,
instructions or just status reports. In a more customized environment, Asms
will work as a two-way messaging system. Customers could request for service from
a Supplier with regard to a malfunctioning piece of equipment or inquire regarding
their service requests, availability of spares etc., by sending a sms or an Email.
Each message received by Asms will be recorded, along
with the action taken. This allows the Suppliers to handle their Customer Complains
or Service Requests efficiently and in an organized manner.
Here again, achieving
near paper-less environment has been one of the key objectives behind the design
of Asms. Wireless Internet
Leased Lines (WiLL) Internet has become an integral part of our lives. Whether
it is conducting your business or studies of your children, Internet plays a major
role, providing information and above all, a media for communication. The
most common form of access to the World Wide Web (WWW) is the telephone and unfortunately,
telephone costs are escalating day by day. Especially for home users, cost of
telephone has become the limiting factor, when using Internet. IDS has developed
an innovative solution for the above problem, Wireless Internet
Leased Line (WiLL), using Radio Frequency Data Communication (RFDC). WiLL
consists of a centrally located wireless Access Point (AP) that is connected to
an Internet Service Provider (ISP) via a Radio Link or a high-speed data link.
One AP will allow around 32 individual links within a radius of up to 10 kms,
each link will delivering 11mbps over the air data rates and 6 mbps through-put. The
primary target market for WiLL, will be low and medium
income housing schemes where several APs located within the scheme will allow
all houses to have 24 hour Internet without telephone costs.
WiLL
could also be applied in situations where small offices need cost effective Internet
leased lines. Two APs installed, one at the user's site and the other at the Base
Station of an ISP will provide a low-cost wireless leased line which will deliver
6 mbps data through-put. Products
